Dental Implants
A dental implant replaces a missing tooth at the root, not just at the surface. A titanium post is placed in the jaw bone, where it fuses with the bone over a few months — then a crown is attached on top. Unlike a bridge, nothing needs to be filed down on the teeth next to the gap.
Overview
- No healthy teeth are altered to support it — the implant stands on its own.
- Bone and gum tissue around the implant are cared for just like natural teeth.
- Digital x-rays and a Panorex scan map the jaw precisely before anything is placed.
What to expect
Consultation and imaging
A Panorex scan maps the full jaw so we can see bone density and plan exact implant placement before any anesthesia.
Placing the implant
Under local anesthetic, a small incision is made and the titanium post is set into the jaw bone. Multiple implants can be placed in the same visit if needed.
Healing — osseointegration
Over roughly 3–6 months the jaw bone fuses to the implant. A temporary crown keeps your bite and smile normal while this happens.
Placing the crown
Once healed, an abutment and a permanent crown are attached. Within a short adjustment period it feels like one of your own teeth.
Frequently asked
A bridge relies on the teeth next to the gap for support, which means filing them down. A denture is removable. An implant stands on its own titanium root and is cared for exactly like a natural tooth.
The placement is done under local anesthetic, so you won’t feel the procedure itself. Mild soreness for a few days afterward is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
Typically 3–4 visits spread over several months, most of that time being the bone healing around the implant. Your first consultation will give you a timeline specific to your case.
With routine hygiene visits and normal home care, an implant can last decades — often a lifetime.
It depends on how many implants you need, bone condition, and insurance coverage. A consultation gets you an exact number and, if useful, a financing plan.
